Is it scary down in new york?

hi im going to new york for 2 months next month to study journalism and im worried. i'll be sharing a flat with my friend, another person doing journalism, and were the type to go clubbing and socilaise. But are the streets really rough and is there certain areas to avoid, boroughs or towns? thanks and prefer answers from new yorkers or people who have been there.
