What kind of TV to get??? What does all the terminology mean?

So this is my second go round with this question. Obviously the first one wasn't clear enough. I just want a TV in my kitchen to hang on the wall (26", 32" or so), nothing fancy, doesn't need surround sound and it won't be used for gaming. I just am in my kitchen for 8 hours at a time somethines when I make cookies for fundraisers or bake bread and a little noise distraction would be nice! SO they all have terms like LCD, plasma, HD and then there's those things like 720p details that I have no idea what that means, etc. Getting any help from the clerks is USELESS as they just want to sell you the most expensive model and are especially condescending to a female. Any help in picking a good brand would be appreciated. Also what is a fair price (Canadian dollars)? Good places to shop (I do NOT internet shop)? I avoid Best Buy (Worst Buy) at all costs!
