Why are the poles colder than that at equator, considering negligible distance difference from the sun?

distance is not the issue... sunlight hits the Earth at nearly 90degrees at the equator, and at nearly 0degrees at the poles. there's also alot more atmosphere for the light to go thru at the poles (not that the atmosphere is 'thicker' there, just based on the angle of attack.)
