Best way to give texture to previously wallpapered walls?

I have torn down ugly wallpaper from my kitchen, and I want to paint the drywall to match the family room. There's not much wall space; behind the fridge, above large windows, around the door, above the cabinetry. What's the easiest/least messy way to give some orange peel like texture to these areas before we paint? Also, will the drywall be subject to absorbing too much water in this process? I don't want to re-paper.
